I like tv but...

Hey guys i need to blog so...

As you may or may not know I work at a local restaurant. And this weekend I saw something that makes me kind of jealous but mostly just shocked. This weekend alone I have seen 3 families who bring some sort of video player to the restaurant with them for their kids. Now, the kids arent that young, and on one occasion it was only the kid and his mother.  When I grew up I never had tv anywhere near a meal or a tv in my room until college, and I was just wondering if this is normal now. Why cant adults talk to their kids? What do you all think?

Yeah I think that's pretty fucked up. These kids aren't learning what real life interactions are like, I personally hate TV and think it's a waste of time. Parents need to realize that kids should be spoken to as is appropriate for their age. Just because someone is under 21 doesn't mean they need to be babied. I hate it when parents treat their teenagers like children and their children like babies.

Because the adults are busy on their cellphones...

At my parents house there is a TV in literally every room, I think that probably explains my interest in media. Anyways, every time I go home my dad watches TV while he cooks and my mom likes to watch TV while we eat. I make them turn the TVs off so we can actually have a conversation and enjoy our food. It's kind of crazy! My story is kind of the opposite of this post, but I definately think that it is interesting in how some families use the TV as a "babysitter".

I've never seen this in action, but I totally believe it. I am disturbed by tvs in cars. Just a random thought. Thanks for the post, Lee.

I've seen that a lot recently too! I just think it's amazing how these parents dont see what lessons they are teaching there kids. It's a proven fact that children learn through interaction, especially babies! So when parents shove their kinds in the corner with a DVD player, they are helping themselves, but in turn hurting their kids. The whole concept is very weird to me.

On the other hand I don't think TV should be completely eliminated from a childs life, same as anything on this earth. Things are ok in moderation. I know as a kid my siblings and I were NEVER allowed to watch TV. While I do understand and respect my parents decisions towards that, I now am absolutley obsessed with TV. It's the kind of thing where I never had it while I was young, so by high school, when my parents no longer monitered me as much, the TV was on ALL the time. I guess I felt like I was making up for lost time. Ha ha.

Lee I have to say when I read this, I laughed a little bit. I've seen this in action too!! Even worse..my ten year old brother insists on bringing his psp out to dinner with us if our family decides to dine at a restaurant that he doesn't approve of. Furthermore, both my sister and I (she is 2 years younger than me) were never allowed to have tvs in our rooms at home. I too had to wait until college to get a privilege like that.
Something else that bothers me, and this is along the same lines as bringing portable dvd players to the table, is when people listen to their ipods, with headphones, while riding in the car with others. I consider both actions to be really rude. I might sound like my parents right now but, what happened to enjoying each others conversation and company..or better yet, the radio?
