Genre Differences

We've been using the terms memoir, personal essay, and creative nonfiction/literary nonfiction fairly loosely in class. However, there are some big differences between these genres, as well as many similarities. What do you think are the differences? What are the conventions of a personal essay versus the conventions of a memoir? Something to think about...

I think one of the biggest differences is tone. The way you say something is going to drastically affect how people receive your message. This seems obvious, but whatever.

Good point. But couldn't you use a casual or informal or funny tone in all of them? What's the difference? I think that a lot of it has to do with perception and the purpose of the piece. Thoughts?
