What is Genre?

Although genre is most commonly referred to as a classification system, it is so much more. Formal classification of material is the effect of genre, but it is not the extent. Genre is, in fact, a response to social situations. It is used to accomplish something. It is used to communication. How would you define genre?

One of my favorite genres is street art. Banksy is an artist who's politically inspired work has gotten a lot of attention in the past couple of years. He doesn't always use words in his graffiti but it's usually pretty obvious he's trying to communicate something deeper then just what we see. You can look at his stuff at the website below:
