Food Writing

Food writing has become a HUGE industry in recent years. It's actually what I want to go into. My favorite food writer is Anthony Bourdain, but there are a lot of lesser known writers who are read and followed all over the country. There's a book Best Food Writing that's released every year. It might be a good place for ideas on the research paper. Normally it has every food controversy and issue from the previous year in it since that's what the food writers where writing about in newspapers and food magazines.

An interesting side note about social action and food, this past week PETA came out with a new protest asking Ben and Jerry's ice cream to use breast milk instead of cow's milk. Hope you're all having a fabulous weekend and the presidential debate didn't make you all fall asleep early on Friday night.

i had to google the icecream thing after i read your mention of the protest. i found this quote here from The Independent...

"Using cows' milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customers' health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer," wrote Tracy Reiman, executive vice president of Peta.

Wow
this is fantastic news. I knew milk was the culprit all along... always giving us diabetes and making us obese. (not to mention, constipated)
it's simply amazing how they can prevent all of those issues just by removing one simple ingredient.

really though, what doesn't give us cancer these days?

and perhaps gorgeing on icecream is causing some of those obesity issues...nahhh.

and what happened to milk building strong bones and all that good stuff?

and why do cows have utters if they aren't meant to be milked?

PETA needs to get it's head on straight and set up a list of priorities.
go after the slaughter houses first...

There's another interesting facet to Internet food culture; there are many blogs that aggregate recipes and write about food. Sites like Tastespotting and Foodgawker display what is referred to weirdly as "food porn" because of how attractive and appealing the items look. The presentations are beautiful to look at, but all of the recipes seem super delicious too!

If you are having trouble finding a topic for the research paper, I suggest looking through the blogs Caitlin has suggested, googling random foods and see what comes up, or check out the book Emily recommended. Other great food authors are Steve Almond and Barabara Kingsoliver.
